Martin wins nomination in Greenwich
03 03 2004 Waltham
Forest nominate Martin
Waltham Forest Association tonight nominated Martin to stand in the GS Election by 20 votes to 6 for Ian Murch(who was represented by Alex Kenny). Thanks to the President, Neil Taylor (who has alreday found fame in the TES for standing in the GTC election on a platform of getting rid of it !) for proposing martin and to the many classroom teachers who once again supported him after hearing the debate.
02 03 2004: Martin
wins Seventh nomination in Bristol
Once again, Martin has won the nomination at another hustings thanks to the
support from the majority of
ordinary teachers comparing the different programmes and approaches of the four
candidates.
Once again, unfortunately, Ian Murch again opted not to come to the meeting.
John Illingworth spoke on his behalf.
The voting in Bristol was Martin 13, Ian 9, Sinnott 5. (John Bangs did not get a
proposer/seconder so had no
votes).
In answer to a question about what they would do about calling for a transfer,
Martin clearly stated he would
transfer to Ian and hoped Ian would do the same to make sure one of the
candidates standing for change
was elected. However Ian, and the other two, refused to say what they would call
for. John Illy argued that
it was irrelevant because Ian would not be knocked out first. ... why is he so
sure given the support
classroom teachers are giving to Martin ? - and what a risk this runs of letting
the old guard back in !
* 26 02 2004 St Helens vote for Martin
Birmingham: Martin 13 Ian Murch 20
"Non-activists support our
campaign"
"The fact that all the non-activist people at the meeting voted for
Martin spoke reams, I think."
This message from Pete Flack an NUT officer who supported Martin's
nomination in Leicester sums up the
appeal of the campaign - and it is the thousands of ordinary teachers
looking for change who will be
voting in the ballot after all ! - and we can definitely get on that
ballot paper if we continue to
work for every nomination.
Last night St.Helens Association gave Martin his sixth nomination (18
in favour 3 against nominating Martin)
After a hustings in Birmingham last night , Ian Murch won their
nomination as expected - but only by 20 to
13 - (with 2 for John Bangs). Once again, most of the "Non-activists"
supported Martin.
* Leicester 25 02 04
Martin has won another nomination tonight (Wed 25th)
in the City of Leicester Association.
Outside speakers were not invited so this was
following a debate amonst the Association members.
20 voted for Martin, 6 for Ian Murch
* Liverpool 24 02 04
On top of the three nominations gained so far in
London (Lewisham, Harrow, Bromley), Liverpool
Association last night (Tuesday) also voted to
nominate Martin.
The vote was decisive: Martin 20, Ian Murch 5, Steve
Sinnott 4, John Bangs 1. A big thank you to supporters
in Liverpool who got teachers to the meeting to listen
to the arguments and vote.
* Harrow 11 02 04
The Harrow meeting today voted to nominate Martin. The main
factor in the discussion was that the union was perceived as not doing
enough to defend teachers. There have been many unopposed changes
in teaching....time for a change of leadership.
