Redbridge Hustings

Martin was joined by John Bangs at the final hustings of the campaign at the Teachers’ Centre in Ilford, North London, hosted by Redbridge NUT. Alex Kenny spoke on behalf of Ian Murch while Steve Sinnott was not represented at the meeting.

Martin welcomed the chance to make the last speech at the last hustings at the end of a long campaign. He explained why he had stood in this election to offer teachers a real change, a candidate in touch with the problems facing teachers and prepared to stand firm against a Government that cannot be trusted with the future of public services.

Martin’s stand has sharpened the debate in the election, forcing other candidates to take on board his proposals for action. For example, at the Rebridge meeting, John Bangs also called for support for one-day action against the threat to force teachers to work on until 65 to get a full pension.

Martin concluded by calling on teachers to vote Powell-Davies 1, Murch 2 to make sure that the old guard that have let down teachers are not left in charge of the Union. The election was wide open and every vote mattered. With a new leadership prepared to go out and build members’ confidence to take the action needed, NUT members can go forward and start winning for teachers and for education.
